History of St Michael's Church |
|
Introduction Evidence found when the south porch was built suggests that the first church on the site was probably built of reed, wood and mud at sometime around 850 AD. Inside the church are the remains of a Saxon cross dating from around this time.
Since then the church has been extended and altered many times, although its basic pattern has remaiend the same since the 14th century.
Inside you will find medieval carved figures, ancient tombs, tudor roof beams, an Easter sepulchre, a barrel vaulted chapel, and above all a living and thriving place of worship. Well worth a visit if you are in the area!
We have prepared a booklet with an
account of the church's history and distinctive features. Click
here to view it (or right click and "save target as" to
download as a PDF file).
